2. Tutorial Summary
a. How have the websites attempted to appear authentic?
b. Four clues that give away each site as being a spoof?
c. Before visiting www.martinlutherking.org, what did you expect to find on it based on the URL?
d. After visiting the site, what was your first impression of it?
e. After researching on Martin Luther King, what do you think of the website?
3. Reading 1 Summary- ‘A brief history of the internet’
4. Reading 2 Summary- ‘ History of the World-wide Web’

Lecture Notes-

  • On the net you find computers and connections are cables between the computers.
  • On the web you find documents,sounds,videos...information and connections are hypertext links.
  • The web is a universe of accessible information stored on computers throughout the world.
  • Web browsers are programmes that allow users to access and explore the pages of the world wide web. (Internet explorer, mozilla firefox).

    Scotsman evaluation-

The Scotsman site has tried to appear authentic by using the template from another site and just altering it with their name.

  • There are no contact details
  • It comes under a subdomain, which shows that this person has just signed up under the name of the main website scotsman.com and therefore it could be anybody.
  • Some of the hyperlinks on this website are inactive. Including information regarding the first prize

Molossia Evaluation -

The molossia site has tried to appear authentic in many ways. This can only be matched by the mistakes they have made and that they are not an authentic site.

  • Barely any contact details
  • Current time in Molossia is different to the region it is located
  • The layout of the website shows that it is not really a professional website
  • When the keyword Molossia is searched on search engines, there is barely any information showing to proove that the country is real. (Google search finds limited results).

Martin Luther King Evaluation-

I thought that the martin luther king site would have some interesting information about the famous man but i guess i was wrong. This site is making a joke about the man and it isnt really funny, just lame. I have found out that he didnt feel very forgiving towards the white people back then as you can assume but i did not know he would refer to them as "sick white brothers". Although the racism back then would have been soaring, MLK was an icon and a leader for the black people and i respect him for that.

Origins Of The Internet -

Discusses the first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking which was a series of memos in August 1962 written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT. Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first book on packet switching theory in 1964. The rest of the article discusses the steps that proceeded to make the ARPANET network that would eventually turn into the internet.

Histroy Of The World Wide Web -

Gives information on not only the history of the internet and computers but also search engines and databases online. The first search engine was created in 1990 by the McGill Univeristy in Montreal, Canada called ARCHIE. The site then goes on to show the evolution of search engines and databases.

  • 10 Search Tips-

    1. Use plus and minus keys. + and - will give searche outcomes that return with words that are appropriately included or excluded according to the plus and minus keys. This results in a more specific and reliable search.

    2. Use quotiation marks in the search. This will produce search results that are exactly matched to what has been written in between the quotation marks.

    3. Most important word comes first. If you are including several words in the search, make sure the main word is put first. This will help the search engine to bring you what you want.

    4. Type in lower case. If you use capital letters in your searches, it will only return matches with capitals. Using lower case will search for both.

    5. Truncation. If you want your search to be broadened, use variations in spelling. For example. Domination,Dominator etc.

    6. Use a mixture of both key words and phrases. This will help you get the most specific results which are most relevant to your search needs.

    7. The find command. Trying to find a word or phrase on a webpage can be difficult, but simply use the find command to take you to where you need to be.

    8. Know your search engine. Find out how your search engine works and makes its matches. Failure to use + and - can most of the time cause a search engine to use its own settings.

    9. Natural language - This is the easiest to use. It is used in web search tools, simply enter a full sentence and the engine will find it for you.

    10. Menus - For the infrequent user of search engines. This is the easy way to find material by utilising the given menus to track the information you are looking for.

The service of interactive tutorials would be used by most people around the world as they need a wider and more broad understanding of the symptoms, prevention and causes of these conditions. This can be very helpful as it has enough information to inform the reader about if they might have the condition and what they should do instead of ignoring the symptoms.

Finding What You Want On The Web -

Bill Thompson talks about the stupidity of the search engines and its mess that you get when you type in a couple of words on google as an example. He also goes on the subject of the web being "dumb" and sais that "links dont carry meaning and until they do, we will be seeing this mess of links on search engines for a while" and that searching is just not 1 search engine but using more then 3 even to find the better information to link it in.

    Bare bones search tips -

Deals with various ways of finding what you want when you use search engines such as using a + and - sign infront of words to force their inclusion. The site talks about using the link you found on the search engine and using the "find" search on the site to better enhance your findings.
